Bootleg CDs are collections of music, usually of live or unreleased tracks, that find their way into the hands of collectors without the direct approval of the artist or the artist's record label. Although manufacture and distribution of these CDs is prohibited or discouraged in most countries, certain record labels still find the channels to sell this material to distributors and fans, who often pay the premium prices that are associated with them. The sound quality is usually but not always inferior to offically released album, but they are still very collectible, if only for the novelty. There is no means by which to determine if this is a complete list, especially if you consider privately-pressed discs which are starting to invade the underground market. At this point, only record-labeled releases of mass pressings are included in this list, except where noted. To determine if a CD is either mass-produced or privately pressed, check the underside of the disc (non-printed side). If it is blue-gold or green, the CD was privately pressed. If it is silver, then it is probably an original. Another way to check is if the printed side of the disc is silk-screened (original) or labeled with an adhesive sticker (copy). Unfortunately, as CD recorders become more popular, it will be easier for people to make copies of original CDs and sell them as "bootlegs". This activity forces collectors to carefully inspect discs when they find them. Only originally pressed CDs are worth their value. The author wishes to thank everyone who has contributed content to this collection. I know there are some titles out there that I do not have details for. If you have an Elton John "bootleg" CD that is not mentioned here, please drop me a line, and we'll try to add it. I do not have any information regarding the availability or purchase of any of these CDs. This site is provided as a reference resource only! |
